105 years ago John Fletcher Dodd decided to open up the back garden of his Caister home to campers, and the site, now operated by Haven Holidays, is still going strong.
That first summer Dodd played host to three old-fashioned bell tents, but now hundreds of holidaymakers flock to his former home to enjoy the timeless delights of sun, sea and sand for a fraction of the cost of a hotel or guest house.
The modern site offers space for traditional mobile caravans as well as spacious, luxuriously appointed static caravans which cater to the huge demand for bargain family holidays. Nowadays visitors can expect full restaurant service as well as a packed programme of entertainments and activities.
Caister’s caravanning industry has thrived, as the village’s proximity to Yarmouth means that holidaymakers can enjoy all the delights of the seaside city while also being able to spend evenings relaxing in Caister’s beautiful surroundings.
John Fletcher Dodd could never have predicted the impact that his decision would have on the local community, but one thing’s for sure: Caister’s camping scene has come a long way from three bell tents.
